Who We Are
The Equity Center was founded in 1982 by
55 school districts as a response to the gross
inequities that existed in the state’s school finance
system. The effects of the inequities were so severe
that they were preventing districts from providing the
educational opportunities their students deserved.
Over time, the Equity Center has become
the largest research and advocacy organization of its
kind in the nation and the only education association in
Texas that exclusively represents the interests of
children in school districts that are chronically
under-funded by the Texas school finance system.
Our first priority has always been, and
will always be, to increase access to financial
resources for our member school districts. To achieve
equity and adequacy, a school finance system must
provide all school districts fair and equal access to
the state’s resources while recognizing real cost
differences among students and districts.
For the sake of Texas children and Texas
communities.
